Hendersonville’s first craft brewery gets go-ahead

Hendersonville leaders on Tuesday cleared the way for the city’s first craft brewery — complete with an on-premises tap room.
Eleven members of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted on second reading for an ordinance amending the municipal code regarding the manufacture of beer.
Alderman Darrell Woodcock proposed the ordinance after being approached by resident Nate Newton who wants to open his own craft brewery. Several similar businesses — in which specially crafted beer is produced in small batches — have become popular in other cities locally and across the country.
Currently, the Hendersonville municipal code allows for a brewery, but does not allow one to sell directly to customers or serve beer on its premises.
The amended ordinance passed its first reading on Oct. 28 with much of the discussion centering around Newton’s proposed tap room.Few businesses are allowed to sell beer for on-premises consumption within the city’s limits. They include golf and private clubs, bowling alleys and restaurants.
