Pass me a cold one! The 10 states with the most craft breweries per 100,000 adults

Martin Luther is said to have suggested drinking beer was good for avoiding sin. Well, then, Americans must be sinning less all the time and avoiding it with tastier and tastier brews.

Here in the U.S., the craft-brewing industry has taken off like a wildfire in the last 20 years and it now holds a solid 11 percent of the beer market, according to statistics from the Brewers Association, a national trade organization.

Production of craft beer surged another 18 percent last year, to produce more than 17.5 million barrels nationally. Just a decade earlier, that number was just 3.7 million.

But some states are getting more craft beer action than others.

We ranked the top 10 states for craft breweries per 100,000 adults 21 or older, according to information from the Brewers Association , along with some population data from the U.S. Census Bureau.Washington doesn’t top the list — it doesn’t even make the top five — but our home state does still have the second-most breweries in the nation overall with 256 (California tops out at […]

But craft beer purveyors say they’re still fighting for independence from an inflexible system set in place by a 43-year-old state law that binds them to distribution agreements and strangles their industry.

“There’s absolutely just no justification for keeping this law on the books,” said Jeremy Goldberg, owner of Cape Ann Brewing in Gloucester and a member of the Massachusetts Brewers Guild, which represents craft brewers. “We’re one of the few growing manufacturing industries in the state, and this law does nothing but harm.”

Brewers who want to sever a relationship with their wholesaler must appeal to the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission and show “good cause.”Goldberg and other craft brewers are backing a […]

(Photo: File photo/Joe Ellis/The Clarion-Ledger) Since 2013, the city of Jackson had been without a beer festival, specifically one that highlights the craft beer that became available through a 2012 state law that raised the alcohol limit for brewers.

The Fondren Renaissance Foundation, in conjunction with Capital City Beverage and Southern Beverage Company, is stepping into the void created when Top of the Hop ended its Jackson festival with Friday’s Mississippi Craft Beer Festival at Duling Hall.

“Since (Top of the Hops) no longer exists in our area, so many different brewers have been introduced in the craft beer market,” Fondren Renaissance Executive Director Jim Wilkirson said. “ It allows not only the public but also our restaurateurs around the area a chance to sample all of the offerings that are now available in the state of Mississippi.”

The event will feature more than 105 craft beer variations between 28 breweries from Mississippi and surrounding states.

Before Mississippi’s law change made it more attractive to craft brewers, the state’s only brewery was Lazy Magnolia in Kiln, said Craig […]

2014 Was Another Great Year For American Craft Beer [Infographic]

The craft beer revolution isn’t showing any signs of slowing down with 2014 proving another great year for brewers across the United States. According to the Brewers Association , there were approximately 1,521 operating craft breweries nationwide in 2008. By the end of 2014, there were 3,418. The number of barrels produced has also skyrocketed from 9 million in 2008 to 22 million in 2014. Craft brewers now have an 11 percent share of the beer market – the first time small and independent brewers have obtained a double digit market share. They’re aiming for 20 percent by 2020. THOMAS, W.Va. (AP) — Drive through one-stoplight Tucker County, and soon you can probably hit a quarter of West Virginia’s craft breweries before catching a steady cell phone signal.

Out in the state’s far-removed eastern Allegheny mountains, it’s become less of a secret that West Virginia’s second-least populated county is flush with some of its most notable brews. Sandwiched by state parks, it also hosts plenty of Washington, D.C. area folks looking to get away for skiing, hiking, biking, camping and kayaking.

Here, woodsy-themed Mountain State Brewing Co. — the biggest brewer in the state — and European-style Blackwater Brewing Co. — whose owner drives the delivery truck — are 2 miles apart.

Thanks in part to them, officials have made state law friendlier to the beer brewed in their backyard.

Down the street, a couple is sprucing up the soon-to-be home of a third brewing headquarters, Stumptown Ales. Only Monongalia County, a beer market home to West Virginia University, has as many breweries.Last legislative session, owners of Mountain State and Blackwater lobbied to land more flexibility and […]
