Paso Robles, Calif. —With a technological twist and a touch of wizardry, Firestone Walker’s Nitro Merlin Milk Stout is expanding from the keg and headed into the can.

“Our task was to create cans that perfectly replicate the draft experience of Nitro Merlin Milk Stout, from the beautiful foam to the smooth, creamy mouthfeel,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “After exploring all of our options, we settled on a widget-free canning technology that absolutely nails it.”

Nitro Merlin Milk Stout was released exclusively on draft two years ago as Firestone Walker’s first broad-market nitro beer—and it now becomes the brewery’s first-ever canned nitro beer, with six packs (12-ounce cans) rolling out to all Firestone Walker markets starting next week.

Named for a brewery founder’s winning racing horse, this mixed culture saison is refermented with grape skins and pressed juice from Casa Barranca Winery in Ojai, California. A long time ago, before the Reinheitsgebot, the line between wine and beer was thin. With brewers experimenting with every conceivable ingredient—including in this case, spelt and sauvignon blanc grape juice and skins—it still is today. The golden beer is so turbid, it’s almost opaque and is lovely below a bright white head. The nose is more refined than many lambics, distinct but without barnyard flavors. It is nicely acidic, well-balanced, with a fruitiness that is refreshing and easy to drink. A distinctive package, it would be handsome on the Thanksgiving table. Even better would be Champagne Room with turkey, oyster dressing and candied yams.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah —On December 6th Epic Brewing purchased Telegraph Brewing Company, Santa Barbara’s first and original craft brewery, and has announced investment plans to expand Telegraph and broaden the brewery’s reach as an additional brand in the Epic family.

Telegraph Brewing has been operating in Santa Barbara since 2006 when Founder Brian Thompson opened his dream brewery, focused on high-quality, Belgian-inspired, uniquely-Californian beers produced with local ingredients.

“So much has changed in the craft beer world since I started Telegraph, back when hazy beers were just called unfiltered and there were fewer than 1,500 brewers nationwide,” Thompson said. “Today, with the number of breweries approaching 6,000, the craft brewing landscape is radically different. Hazy gold to orange. Fresh limes from a distance. A hint of malt sweetness on the nose makes it more like citrus soda or the smell of a citrus candy with nose in the glass. Lemon juice and grapefruit pith on the palate. Elevated carbonation with a satisfying slight chewiness to the mouthfeel. Refreshing, to be sure. Somewhat reminiscent of a margarita overall.

Lighter end of gold for color. I got cinnamon notes on the nose to start with a tart red apple background. Fruity tartness persists in the palate, but it is mild—nothing you’d ever be tempted to call “sour.” Thin body, semi-dry overall—both reasonable traits for a Saison. Refreshing but somewhat one-dimensional in flavor. Neither as yeast driven nor as much a showcase for European hops as it might be. Seems like a reasonable partner for Carne Asada or Tacos Al Pastor as suggested by the can copy.

MORGANTON, N.C. and CHARLESTON, S.C.– Catawba Brewing Co. of Morganton, NC (Catawba) and Palmetto Brewing Company of Charleston SC (Palmetto) are excited to announce the two companies are being joined into a single entity. Catawba intends to finalize the purchase of Palmetto by the end of 2017 with the Pyatt family retaining 100% ownership.

“The closer we became to Palmetto’s owners, the Lipov family, the more we realized our two companies were very similar,” said Pyatt. “Palmetto will produce around 16,000 barrels in 2017, and Catawba will produce around 17,500.
