Enlarge TBBJ file Joey Redner Tampa Bay beer enthusiasts will no doubt celebrate Independence Day with their favorite locally brewed craft beer brand, and some of those breweries have once again bested beer makers around the world in the annual international U.S. Open Beer Championship.

Results for seventh annual brewing competition, based in Ohio, were announced today.

“These competitions include several of the best breweries in the world,” said Barry Elwonger , marketing director of Motorworks in Bradenton. Motorworks took a bronze for its Two Stroke beer in the imperial IPA category.

“It’s awesome that we continue to win medals at the highest scale,” he said.

Judges blind tasted about 4,000 beers and ciders for 90 different styles of beer from San Diego to Shanghai. (Photo: File photo/Joe Ellis/The Clarion-Ledger) Since 2013, the city of Jackson had been without a beer festival, specifically one that highlights the craft beer that became available through a 2012 state law that raised the alcohol limit for brewers.

The Fondren Renaissance Foundation, in conjunction with Capital City Beverage and Southern Beverage Company, is stepping into the void created when Top of the Hop ended its Jackson festival with Friday’s Mississippi Craft Beer Festival at Duling Hall.

“Since (Top of the Hops) no longer exists in our area, so many different brewers have been introduced in the craft beer market,” Fondren Renaissance Executive Director Jim Wilkirson said. “ It allows not only the public but also our restaurateurs around the area a chance to sample all of the offerings that are now available in the state of Mississippi.”

The event will feature more than 105 craft beer variations between 28 breweries from Mississippi and surrounding states.

On Wednesday over lunch, dozens of visitors stopped by Zeroday Brewing Co. i n the back of Midtown Cinema for opening day. Outside, there was a ribbon cutting ceremony complete with a Star Wars’ Stormtrooper character.

It was followed by a gathering inside the brewery for a celebratory pint. Among the selections –  Firstborn, a dry stout; Cheap Date, an American blonde ale; and Zeroday pale ale, all brewed on the premises.

"I feel happy because we have worked so hard and so long to bring this to fruition," said Brandalynn Armstrong, who owns Zeroday with her husband, Theo Armstrong.

Zeroday is the second brewery in Harrisburg city alongside Appalachian Brewing Co. on Cameron Street. Enlarge Photo Jeff Balfour is transforming the historic Pearl Brewery buidling into a new brewpub, Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery. The Brewers Association has released a new report, which portrays a bright future for San Antonio companies looking to grow their craft beer business.

The report shows that craft brewers accounted for 11 percent of the volume share in the U.S. beer market in 2014. That’s the first time, according to the association — which represents small and independent American brewers — that craft brewers have reached double digits in terms of percentage of volume share.

The craft beer segment generated $19.6 billion in U.S. retail sales last year. That represents 22 percent growth over the previous year.

Several Alamo City entrepreneurs are looking to tap into increased demand for craft beers.

Four Indiana Area High School alumni are hoping to open a beer brewery in Indiana County later this year.

Noble Stein Brewing Company, operated by Alexander D. Varner, 26; Maxwell D. Varner, 25; Benjamin C. Harley, 29; and Zachary M. Morrow, 27, is looking to open a brewery in White Township in the fall.

The men are home brewers in the process of getting state and federal licenses, and are looking to purchase property along Wayne Avenue. For now, they’re brewing beer in Alexander Varner’s garage along Ben Franklin Road.

“Indiana has been underserved in the explosion in the craft beer market,” Morrow said Saturday. “We want to bring Indiana the beer it deserves.”“We have an intimate connection with this town,” Alexander Varner said.The four men have been brewing together since September 2013.
