OAKLAND PARK, Fla. –Funky Buddha is proud to announce The Living Barrel Series, its latest line of specialty beers with a new, enlightened look. A bit about the series:

“Like the spiraling growth of a tree’s branches, so too are these beers transformed over time thanks to the maturation exclusively in oak wine and spirits casks. Unlike the ageless timber, these bottles are only available for a limited time.”

As Funky Buddha has grown so has its barrel-aging program. Our current barrel cellar consists of over five hundred oak casks of all types. On the floor right now are hundreds of Bourbon barrels filled with everything from imperial stout to double brown ales; saisons aging in Chardonnay casks; and a multitude of unique wine and spirits casks including rum, tequila, and even luscious Cabernet. Each beer is sampled regularly to examine how the beer has matured and picked up characteristic of the barrel, which can lend everything from boozy complexity to subtle hints of spice and vanilla.

In upcoming months […]

Foreign Exchange: American Beer Styles, Brands Capture Attention of Drinkers Abroad

(Illustration by Jeff Quinn) Ben Beinhardt has lived in Germany all his life, surrounded by hundreds of years of brewing tradition and some of the most iconic brands the world has known. He still fondly recalls his first Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock, made at a brewery that’s been around since 1877, and his excitement at drinking a beer steeped in Bavarian heritage. He also favors Augustiner-Bräu, which started brewing in 1328, and its Edelstoff and Lagerbier Hell brands.

But honestly, he wouldn’t mind an American IPA, either.

“I think it’d be great if we had new beers coming into the country and you get younger people to drink them,” says Beinhardt, 35, a resident of Stuttgart in the country’s southwest Baden-Württemberg state. “Developing a new beer culture in Germany would be tremendous and help our beer scene, but it would also take a lot of time and money.”

Maybe something like the $25 million Stone Brewing spent to open its production facility in Berlin? Beinhardt isn’t sure yet, but after a trip to the United States in 2014 […]

MILLS RIVER, N.C. —Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. today announced a voluntary recall of select 12-ounce bottles that may contain a glass packaging flaw. This recall comes after quality inspections at the company’s Mills River, North Carolina, brewery detected a very limited number of bottles with a flaw that may cause a small piece of glass to break off and possibly fall into the bottle, creating a risk for injury. The recall applies to product purchased in the Midwest, Southern and East Coast states listed below.

“While we believe this concern impacts roughly 1 in every 10,000 (0.01%) of our bottles packaged during this time,” says Mike Bennett, Chief Supply Chain Officer, “Sierra Nevada has set the standard for quality in the craft brewing industry since 1980 and we have decided to take this precaution to ensure the safety of our consumers. To date, we have not received any consumer reports of injuries resulting from the potentially affected bottles and we are working with our supplier to determine the root cause of […]

Fat Head’s Brewery to withdraw distribution from Florida in 2017

[Press Release:]

(Middleburg, OH) — Fat Head’s Brewery will withdraw its business from Florida in 2017 in an effort to focus on its core markets of Ohio and Pennsylvania, where it sees significant short and long-term growth opportunity. The brewery has worked with Cavalier Distributing in Florida and will team closely with them to ensure the withdrawal is as minimally disruptive as possible to their retail partners. Cavalier Distributing will continue its relationship as Fat Head’s wholesale representative in Ohio and Indiana.

While Florida’s craft beer market is seeing some of the most rapid growth in the country, Fat Head’s existing volume limitations make it necessary to concentrate their beer supply regionally. The last delivery to Florida is slated for arrival in early January, with the expectation that the market will be exhausted of Fat Head’s beer by early February.

“While this wasn’t an easy decision, based on current capacity constraints, we think it is in the best long-term interest of consumers to focus our available resources and supply within our core footprint of Ohio, Pennsylvania […]

3 Daughters Rod Bender

No, not that rod! The name refers to the big fish that didn’t get away, mouth open on the can. Red is right, with an off-tan head. Harvest nose is fresh and balanced. Silky mouthfeel gets you hooked. Clean aftertaste. We caught fresh local tuna at the farmer’s market this morning. Served with fresh spinach, beer-battered zucchini flowers, oat bread and topped off with apples and grapes from our garden. We were ready for another rod bender!

Charles Finkel is founder of Merchant du Vin and the Pike Brewing Co. Finkel is a pioneer in the marketing of beers in America. Beautifully crystal clear and amber-red with ample head. Exquisite toasted malt aroma invites. Light cocoa flavor notes blend with toasted grain character balancing refreshing dryness with cocoa mouthfeel. Gentle and well-balanced hop bitterness. Very refreshing finish with high drinkability. Easygoing complexity lends itself to all kinds of food combinations. Don’t let the amber red fool you. This is a great beer for the local climate in Florida all year around. I’m thirsty; let […]
