Not being real doesn't stop Manaphin from getting its own craft beer

ST. PETERSBURG — The Manaphin was long believed to be extinct until its sudden reappearance last April Fool’s Day — as a clever marketing hoax perpetrated by Pinellas tourism officials.

The imaginary half-dolphin, half-manatee Manaphin has its own website and "manafan" T-shirt. Now it has its own craft beer, too.

St. Pete’s Green Bench Brewing Co. created the limited edition Manaphin Chocolate Stout to celebrate today’s one-year anniversary of the Manaphin hoax. Six months in the making, the new brew was made with bourbon barrel-aged imperial oatmeal sweet stout aged on chocolate and vanilla.

The public was invited to taste the new Manaphin Chocolate Stout on Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Green Bench Brewing, 1133 Baum Ave N. There will also be music, food trucks and Manaphin T-shirts.

The Manaphin gag was concocted by the county’s tourism agency, Visit St. Pete/Clearwater. In February, the April Fool’s Day marketing ploy was honored by the Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International’s Adrian Awards in New York City.

Jim Vorel writes in Paste Magazine on this amber pour: "This is easy-drinking, malt-driven beer, with a very clean, crisp grain character and a hint of crystal sweetness, backed up by lightly fruity hops. It stays quite dry, all things considered, which raises the drinkability even more.

Kennedy Craft Beer will start brewing in about a year, managing partner Sean Kennedy said Thursday. A family-run venture among seven cousins, brothers, dads and uncles — all with the last name of Kennedy — the brewery hopes to mix casual dining with first-class beer.

Elgin's Plank Road Tap Room spotlights craft beer

Alan and Breanne Moreno wanted to open a bar, and after touring 15 breweries around Colorado, they decided to make it a tap room devoted only to craft beer, without the distractions of preparing cocktails or food. They didn’t want to brew their own beer, so they opened Elgin’s Plank Road Tap Room in August as a way for other breweries to show off their latest work and for drinkers to get exposure to the ever-expanding world of beer.

Motif: The tiny spot features picnic-style communal wooden tables and a bar set with stools. The constantly changing draft list is written on a piece of paper on the wall and photos of breweries decorate the space. Come summer, the owners plan to take advantage of the seven acres of land the taproom sits on and add a fire pit and yard games.

Shelves are stocked with board games including Scrabble and Apples to Apples. The space also regularly hosts special events such as painting lessons and a class on how to take pictures using your cellphone.

Food: Plank Road doesn’t serve any food, but they bring in food trucks on the weekends that set up shop in the parking lot. […]

Craft brewery projects focus on customer experience

A worker with Piper Whitney Construction moves a wheel barrow of concrete during a concrete pour Wednesday at the Town in City Brewing Company on West Cavalcade.

Several local brewery construction projects headed for completion in 2015 are designed to draw in visitors as well as ship beer out the door.

The neighborhood-centric Town In City Brewing Co. in the Heights could open in February, co-owner Justin Engle said earlier this week, as workers poured and leveled concrete for sidewalks and a driveway entrance into the startup brewery at 1125 W. Cavalcade.

In addition to selling beer to other retailers, Town In City will open each Wednesday through Sunday for customers to buy beer that they can drink in its 700-square-foot taproom or 1,400-square-foot outdoor beer garden. Food trucks will be invited on site, and there will be a dedicated, secure bicycle parking area.

Engle said the goal is to create a neighborhood gathering spot like many of the breweries he enjoyed visiting when he lived in Colorado. He’d prefer a steady daily business to a more crowded once-a-week tour.Engle and partner Steven Macalello bought a vacant lot on Cavalcade, between Main and Airline, and built a […]

Grab a craft beer at these 4 great brewery New Year's parties

Hangar 24 mixed with GRB Valentin is a popular special at Golden Road Brewery in Los Angeles. (Gina Ferazzi / Los Angeles Times) We’ve all been there before — waiting to finalize plans for New Year’s Eve until the last minute, and then realizing that nothing sounds all that compelling. This year, forget the fancy clubs and expensive parties, and celebrate the end of 2014 at one of L.A.’s craft breweries.

More laid back than the velvet rope and bottle service scene, but more festive than wishing Dick Clark was still in charge of seeing the ball drop in your PJs, there are a handful of New Year’s celebrations happening at local craft breweries and brewpubs this year.

Angel City Brewery — Arts District Downtown

The downtown brewery will be showing off their new events space adjacent to the brewhouse with a handful of live bands, a selection of food trucks and plenty of fresh beer. There’s no cover for the party , and the brewery is just a couple of blocks away from the Little Tokyo Gold Line station; the party begins at 9 p.m.  216 S. Alameda Street, Los Angeles, (213) 622-1261,  angelcitybrewery.com .
