It was designated a “Special Brew” on its label and given as a gift to important friends of the brewery, including President Harry Truman. Jolly Pumpkin Rojzilla Michigan Soure Biere label BeerPulse Liquorscan Press Release:

(Dexter, MI) – Jolly Pumpkin Ales quintessential beer – La Roja – may be hard to find, but two new specialty brews will hit the marketplace in limited quantities this month and are sure to quench the thirst of sour beer lovers around America. Rojzilla and La Roja du Kriek will be distributed in Michigan and 34 other states during the brand’s “April Showers Bring Jolly Pumpkin Sours” campaign.

La Roja (7.2% ABV | 25 IBU) was the second beer to be released by Jolly Pumpkin, after opening in 2004. This artisan red ale, brewed in the Flanders tradition, is deep amber in color with earthy caramel, spice and sour fruit notes that are developed through natural barrel aging.

Flanders ales are fermented with usual brewer’s yeast in an unfiltered and unpasteurized fashion, then placed into oak barrels to age and mature. The mature beer is then blended with younger beer, to adjust the taste for consistency. The name comes from the usual color of […]

Odell Fernet Aged Porter Press Release:

Odell Brewing and Leopold Bros. collaborate on 2nd release

(Fort Collins, CO) – In January, Odell Brewing will release the second edition of its Fernet Aged Porter , a rich imperial porter aged in retired Leopold Bros. Fernet barrels.

“Fernet Aged Porter is thin yet dark, a deep ebony liquid beneath a sandy tan head composed of large, fragile bubbles that pop away rather quickly giving up beautiful aromatics as it does,” said Zachary Fowle in his review for the Phoenix New Times. “Chocolate is noticeable foremost, in multiple forms. Herbal mint, anise, and alcohol swirl in the background.”

Fernet is a dark minty liqueur made with herbs & spices and aged in oak barrels. Leopold Bros. has crafted its own unique recipe which includes lavender, honeysuckle, ginger root, bitter aloe, dandelion root, rose petals, chamomile, and peppermint.

“Our Fernet is the most bitter type of Amaro (Italian word for bitter) that is prepared by steeping various botanicals, with a large proportion of bitter roots, in spirit,” said distiller Todd Leopold, “so far as we are aware, it is the first of its kind produced in America since well before Prohibition.”Fernet Aged Porter is offered […]

This unique release is a whiskey barrel-aged take on the brewery’s Small Batch 72 Imperial, an imperial chocolate cream stout. For every 100 bbl. batch, 400 lbs. of Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory lustrous chocolate, made especially for 72 Imperial, are added to the brew. After spending a considerable amount of time in whiskey-soaked oak barrels, the finished product is molasses in color and smells of chocolate, wood, and whiskey harmoniously blended together. The beer has a dense and decadent mouthfeel and an abundance of rich flavors, including hints of sherry and dark fruit that compliment the toasted chocolate and oak notes remarkably.

SACO – It may sound simple, but “consistently providing a great product” is what keeps customers coming back to Barreled Souls Brewing Co. in Saco, said Chris Schofield, owner and head brewer of the business, which opened in July.

“This not only applies to the beers we make, but also to the service and atmosphere we create in the tasting room,” he said, of the brewery, which ferments 100 percent of its beers in oak barrels.

Barreled Souls joins a growing brewery presence locally, including Run of the Mill Public House & Brewery, the first and only other brewery in the city, and Banded Horn Brewing Co., at the Pepperell Mill Campus in Biddeford.

Schofield, from Old Orchard Beach, runs the brewery and tasting room with his lifelong friend Matthew Mills. Both grew up in Wells and have […]

Firestone Walker Agrestic release set for 9/20, four Barrelworks bottles on deck

Firestone Walker Agrestic American Wild Red Ale News Wire:

(Buellton, CA) – The wild things are bouncing of the walls at Firestone Walker Brewing Company’s Barrelworks wild yeast facility, setting the stage for more unruly releases in 2014.

The next bottling to be sprung from Barrelworks is Agrestic , an American wild red ale that will be released at the Liberation of Agrestic event on September 20. Only 600 cases of 375ml bottles were produced, and they will only be available at Barrelworks and the brewery in Paso Robles.

Agrestic is an audacious riff on the brewery’s original flagship DBA British pale ale. It began its brewing journey as DBA, but took a mutinous turn when it was racked to oak barrels and inoculated with a proprietary collection of microflora.

To create the final blend, barrelmeisters Jeffers Richardson and Jim Crooks blended a selection of different agrestic lots matured from eight to 24 months in French (87%) and American oak (13%) barrels. Toasted oak and lemon pith swirl on the nose and palate, followed by harmonious notes of vanilla, coconut, Earl Grey tea and spice. The finish is crisp, with mouthwatering acidity and chewy tannins.

Last Call for Firestone Walker Double DBA

Firestone Walker Double DBA Press Release:

Paso Robles, CA: The third and final bottled release of Firestone Walker Brewing Company’s barrel-aged Double DBA begins on July 12, setting the stage for an as-yet-unchosen replacement next year.

“The 2014 Double DBA is a big and complex beer that still offers the balance and drinkability that are the hallmarks of DBA,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “This vintage is outstanding, so Double DBA is leaving us on a high note.”

He added, “This beer has served us well, but there’s a finite amount of space and brewing capacity dedicated to our barrel-aged beers. In order to brew and share new barrel-aged beers, we need to rotate some out, starting with Double DBA. So get it while you can.”

Other beers in the brewery’s barrel-aged program include Bravo, Helldorado, Parabajava, PNC, Saucerful of Secrets and Brownie Wine—but it remains to be seen which will replace Double DBA in 2015.

As with previous vintages, the 2014 Double DBA imperial special bitter is Firestone Walker’s flagship DBA brewed at double strength, using twice the amount of malts and hops. As with the regular DBA, the 2014 Double DBA was partially fermented in a union of new American oak barrels. […]
