Three Cheers for Craft Beer

In a mood to down beer? There’s plenty of choice. From light Kingfisher Ultra to bitter-sweet Carlsberg Pilsner to the full-bodied Stella Artois. For those looking for more exotic brews, there’s London Pride, a smooth dark amber ale, or the creamy Belgian wheat beer Hoegarden and dry beer Asahi—all available in stores across the country.

But if it’s freshly brewed, off-the-tap beer that you seek, you have to head to Bengaluru in the south, Mumbai and Pune in the west or Gurgaon in the north. These are the only places that offer craft beer at the moment, but that should change soon. “The market for microbreweries is developing. Currently, only four to five states have allowed microbreweries. But with more consumers travelling globally and gaining exposure to other beers, the market is going to change,” says Sagar Amol Powale, master brewer at 7 Degrees Brauhaus, a microbrewery in Gurgaon that competes with some 14 other players in the area. A micro or craft brewery is one that produces small amounts of freshly brewed beer. The […]

Anchor Steam, America's first craft beer, celebrates 50 years with 'Drink Steam'

John Foyston on Beer Anchor Brewing’s "Drink Steam" initiative is an invitation to try America’s First Craft Beer as the brewery and its fans celebrate the 50th anniversary of the American Craft Brewing Revolution, led by Fritz Maytag who purchased  Anchor Brewing   on August 2, 1965 and changed the industry forever.

"50 years ago, Fritz changed an entire industry built on mass production by holding steadfast to traditional brewing techniques and a commitment to quality," says Anchor Brewing CEO and President Keith Greggor. "We wanted to celebrate the birth of the Craft Brewing Revolution, Fritz’s legacy, and introduce a whole new generation of beer lovers to Anchor Steam Beer. Before the terms, ‘craft brewing’ and ‘micro-brewing’ had even been coined, Anchor had already brewed the first modern American Porter, pale ale, Barleywine, and Wheat Beer. It all started with Anchor Steam Beer though. The foundation of the brewery is built on Anchor Steam; it represents the past, present and future of craft beer."

Anchor still uses vintage copper kettles from a German brewery, copper that’s […]

Next Round: The Gose of Craft Beer's Future

(Photo: Mike Snider, USA TODAY) Craft beer lovers who want to goose their taste buds may want to seek out a haunting style called gose.

American craft brewers have begun to embrace — and put their own twist on —- the salty and often sour ancient German wheat beer.

Gose (pronounced "gose-uh" as in "rose" plus "uh") originated more than 1,000 years ago in the city of Goslar — about 170 miles west of Berlin — along the Gose River, according to its history on The German Beer Institute website .

Yeast and lactic bacteria, which delivers the sourness, are used, as well as the spice coriander and some hops. That sour flavor and the saltiness, originally caused by the natural water used, resulted in a refreshing, low-alcohol beverage.

The beer became especially popular in Leipzig, about 115 miles south of Goslar, with more than 80 taverns devoted to the style there in 1900, the institute says. Gose faded during World War II and only arose after the fall of the Berlin Wall.Like sour beers, which originated in […]

Widmer Brothers Launches Hefe Shandy

(Press Release)
PORTLAND, Ore.— Widmer Brothers Brewing today announced the release of its new summer seasonal offering, Hefe Shandy. Hefe Shandy pays homage to the brewery’s flagship beer, Hefe, playing on the ritual of adding a lemon to the rim, which dates back to the creation of the beer in 1986.

“Hefe has been served with a lemon since the early days,” said Rob Widmer, co-founder of Widmer Brothers Brewing. “The lemon on the rim of the glass has become a recognizable icon for Hefe fans in Oregon and across the country as Hefe’s popularity has grown over the years. With Hefe Shandy, we’re bringing the lemon ritual to life in a whole new way.”

Hefe Shandy features the classic appearance and flavors of Hefe, but is brewed with the new hop varietal, Lemon Drop, and natural lemonade flavor. The result is a bright and refreshing wheat beer with heightened citrus aroma and flavor. Hefe Shandy was crafted with summertime in mind, and at 4.2 percent ABV, it is ideal for long, hot summer days and […]

Anchor Brewing Releases Anchor Summer Wheat

(Press Release)

SAN FRANCISCO— Anchor Brewing Company announces the release of its summer seasonal, Anchor Summer Wheat; a refreshingly light and thirst-quenching American-style filtered wheat beer, now available in cans. “I anticipate the change of the season not only for the weather, but also for the beer,” said Anchor Brewmaster Mark Carpenter. “Anchor Summer Wheat pairs perfectly with a sunny day, whether you’re grilling in the backyard, hiking a trail, spending a day at the beach or anything in-between. By filtering our wheat beer, the brew’s crisp, clean flavors unite to create this quintessential summer refresher. This year we decided to dry-hop the beer for the first time to boost its wonderful hoppy aroma. While the hops add flavors of citrus and pine, the beer maintains the light, refreshing character it’s had since we first brewed it in 1984.”

Released each year in advance of the summer season, Anchor Summer Wheat (4.5% ABV) is an all-malt beer, with over 50% of its malt derived from malted wheat. It is fermented with a traditional top-fermenting ale yeast, […]

Blue Moon to Open Second Denver Brewery

(Press Release)

DENVER— In 1995 a young brewer released a cloudy, Belgian-style wheat beer from Blue Moon Brewing Company at the SandLot , a small brewery inside Coors Field. Since then, beer drinkers around the world have fallen in love with Blue Moon’s artistic approach to brewing. This year marks Blue Moon Brewing Company’s 20 th anniversary and it’s marking that milestone by building another brewery.

“We just locked-down a prime location in the heart of Denver’s rapidly growing RiNo Art District,” said Keith Villa, founder and head brewmaster at Blue Moon Brewing Company. “We founded Blue Moon on a belief that brewing is equal parts art and science. So it’s pretty cool that 20 years later we get to design a new brewery in an area where we’ll be surrounded by fellow artists.”

This innovation and pilot brewery will include a tasting room, tours and plenty of indoor and outdoor space for events. The new Blue Moon brewery in RiNo is tentatively slated to open its doors in 2016. As the birthplace of Blue Moon, […]
